How to Teach Yourself Something New

Once you have passed school age, if you want to learn something new, you will have to enroll yourself in a night school or local college which will teach mature students. This kind of learning can be tough for many because of their home life and a far better option is to hit the internet and educate yourself, on your own time.

There are drawbacks to this of course, you will need to be very disciplined, having nobody there telling what to do and when to do it can be strange and you will need to be self driven. If this is something that interests you then here are a few ways in which you can teach yourself something new.

Schedule

It is absolutely vital that you make a schedule for yourself, this will be one of the key ways that you will be able to stay on track with regards to your studies. Naturally your schedule will work around your responsibilities in your work or home life and it doesn’t matter whether you spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning or a few hours at 10pm at night, the key is to create a schedule that works for you and more importantly, stick to it.

Resources

There are a couple of options when it comes to which resources you use online in order to educate yourself. If you want to do things properly then you could pay to use the amazing study resource, the Great Courses. The Great Courses was designed by Thomas Rollins teaching expert and educator who created a compendium of over 600 different courses for anyone who wishes to study college level topics. This resource was compiled by over 200 university professors and has a structured study plan to it.

Alternatively you could use resources which you have found yourself, wikipedia and even YouTube can be a great way to learn. YouTube has videos on a huge range of subjects and you can even find full classes that have been given by qualified teachers which will help you further learn your subject.

If you plan to learn a new skill or hobby such as a musical instrument then you can use step by step guides like Wikihow or again, YouTube features thousands of tutorials which you can watch to help you the learn.

Testing

Testing yourself to see how much knowledge you have acquired can be tough but you may find test online which have previously been used in schools and colleges. Attached to the tests are answer papers so why not give them to a friend or family member to keep, take the test on your own time and then ask them to mark your work. This may be difficult with less direct questioning but you could always head to a website like Upwork and pay a freelancer to mark your paper, you will find many teachers and professors on the website who can help you out for a small fee.
