Strategy - Drumsolo’s Delight (Kranky) |
Words: Rich Hopkins
Vast washes of sound billow and curl over a heavy downpour of bass, dragged ever forward by crackling glitches and chopped synths. Like all the best Kranky records it allows the listener to slip into daydreams and when a human voice (albeit heavily treated) does appear in “Walkingtime” it’s an almost unwelcome intrusion, as if being called back inside from playtime.
It doesn’t surprise that Paul Dicklow has played keyboards in Fontanelle, the gaseous sound clouds that envelop his vague idea of dub that rival fellow Kranky recording artists Stars of the Lid. This is heavy weather music, perfect for the April showers that come and go within minutes, pelting the ground with icy hailstones one second and then warming it with tentative sunshine the next. |
