Kiln - Sunbox (Ghostly International) |
|
Words: James Papademetrie

This is plotted up squarely within the same nostalgic dreamlands co-habited, albeit in disparate neighbourhoods, by the likes of Plone, National Forest and, of course, Boards of Canada. These may seem flip, lazy comparisons, but they’re unavoidable when Kiln incorporate so many of the same woozy sonic flourishes. There’s no lack of imagination on display and the bubbling two-speed bossa rhythms, crackling electro latticeworks and subtle dub-inflections which infect these misty playground melodies burble along pleasantly and evocatively enough. But, unlike their ghostly compadrés Midwest Product, whose hyper-clean mood pop is tempered by the bite of tight beats, “Sunbox” soon cloys, reminding you that these things work best when underscored by even the vaguest hint of grime or darkness.
