Sonic Youth and Starbucks team up for new SY collection
Words: Plan B
sonicyouthbyamanda.jpg Sonic Youth are set to do what is affectionately known in the biz nowadays as “a Dylan”, releasing a new collection of old material through the label arm of coffee-pushing behemoth Starbucks next month. Sonic Youth, perhaps most famous for being the central protagonists in Plan B Albums Editor Stevie Chick’s latest masterwork, rung round a small army of alt.celebs to help them compile the tracklisting for Hits Are For Squares, with everyone from Eddie Vedder to Chloe Sevigny throwing in their ten pence. Oh, and there’s a new track too, ‘Slow Revolution’, set no doubt to be universally tarred with the “for completists only” brush quicker than you can say “that’ll be two skinny lattes and a copy of EVOL to go please”. Hits Are For Squares is out on June 10. Here’s the tracklisting.

1. Bull In The Heather (selected by Catherine Keener) 2. Sugar Kane (Beck) 3. 100% (Mike Diamond) 4. Kool Thing (Radiohead) 5. Disappearer (Portia De Rossi) 6. Superstar (Diablo Cody) 7. Stones (Allison Anders) 8. Tuff Gnarl (Dave Eggers and Mike Watt) 9. Teenage Riot (Eddie Vedder) 10. Shadow Of A Doubt (Michelle Williams) 11. Rain On Tin (Flea) 12. Tom Violence (Gus Van Zant) 13. Mary-Christ (David Cross) 14. World Looks Red (Chloe Sevigny) 15. Expressway To Yr Skull (Flaming Lips) 16. Slow Revolution (exclusive new track)
