It's a dilemma facing any front-person looking to escape the constraints of their musical day job, "Are these dreaded side project songs going to show a valid, intriguing and different slant to my artistic persona? Or are they just gonna suck?" It must be particularly daunting for Alan Sparhawk considering his benchmarks are the several intensely revered albums recorded by his band, Low. Rather than trying to radically blindside himself, Retribution Gospel Choir take a handful of recent Low songs and re-imagine them with a hint of Crazy Horse bluster. If Low is the elephant in the room, why not stare it down and see what happens? The choir prove to be a cathartic and revelatory approach, and the new material generated finds Sparhawk pushed down a fresh path of musical mischief.
