Do Make Say Think - You, You´re a History in Rust Up (Constellation)
.jpg)
It´s been ten years since Godspeed You! Black Emperor put its first crescendos to tape, and the genre called "post-rock" isn´t doing so hot. Countless collectives repeat the same arpeggios, Montreal´s Mile End is gentrifying, and even A Silver Mt. Zion has embraced vocals.
The interesting stuff seems to be happening on the edges, where the genre abuts noise, metal and dance music. So I approached Do Make Say Think´s new one with trepidation; and imagine my surprise when it is utterly wonderful. They´ve always been a band of texture and heartbeat instead of apocalyptic Big Bangs, and so there´s very little of those quiet-loud-quiet-loud clichés. Instead they trade in the richness of hot sound: sax, piano and brushed drums mingling with heavy bass, occasional voice, autumnal electric guitar. Amidst a thronging that recalls DMST´s Broken Social Scene pals, it´s a music rife with nostalgia, small splendours, phrases repeating and hopeful. |
