There are stories that have saved my life. Stories that took me somewhere else, at times when I needed it. Somewhere ridiculous and magical. There are times when distressed mariners and Turkish princes and Nineteenth-century street urchins became more exciting and real and engaging than whatever horrible soap opera my life was turning into.
But this review isn't about me. It's about the touching lament of poor 'Eli The Barrow Boy'; the disgruntled naif in 'This Sporting Life'; a lovesick, novel-writing 'Engine Driver'; the two tender runaways 'On the Bus Mall'; and the bloodthirsty Moby Dick fantasies of 'The Mariner's Revenge Song', among many other characters.
The Decemberists' sweet storytelling songs don't capture real life so much as transport it somewhere captivating and adventurous, and set it to contagious melodies, rich folky instrumentation, an earnest delivery and jaunty dancing rhythms. They're a charming and delicate daytrip away from quotidian life. And who doesn't want one of those, once in a while?
