Ever since seeing Chilly Gonzales and the Le Together Ensemble at the ICA a couple of weeks back I’ve been digging through my old Gonzales albums and remembering how back in 2001 I was absolutely convinced ‘Take Me To Broadway’ was going to make him extremely famous (it didn’t). After a couple of years away tinkling the ivories, he’s back with his new album Soft Power, and it’s a little ray of sunshine.
Thing with Chilly is that he’s a big ol’ goof (obviously) but also a massive talent - check out this interview with him being interviewed circa Solo Piano a few years back.

The video for Toddla T’s ‘Soundtape Killin'’, above, is not what you’d call…good (unless it ticks a fetish or you were involved in its production) but the song itself is TUFF.
Watch now and slaver with anticipation. Dirty’s long been my favourite member of the Wu cos in my personal game of musical trumps the ‘genuinely unhinged’ wild card beats pretty much anything (cos it suggests everything). This trailer for an upcoming documentary, possibly titled ‘ODB Ason Unique’, is juicy stuff for us Dirty lovers. Big Baby Jesus alone know’s how righteous the final version will be, but even in edited form this is a new gospel of the streets with ODB as saviour. Dig the young girl telling how ODB (literally) saved her life, GZA proclaiming the resurrected Dirty lives on in the crowds at Wu concerts, ‘You see it when the song come on and they sing it and that…he’s not dead’. Amen.
That title is VALID: the English language takes another beating from my typing hands. More pertinently, it refers to my club - It Came From The Sea - which happens again this friday in Brighton. The informative facebook event page is here, and those of you within visiting distance shd note this will be the last in our current venue, and the only fix available to yr weeping ears until July, when we plan on savaging all and sundry (does ’sundry’ ever get used in any oter context?) like a demonstrative and aggrieved toy poodle.

Lastly: asiiiide from Wiley’s monsterish number and maybe Metronomy’s more-right-than-wrong-but-not-thru-want-of-trying ‘My Heart Rate Rapid’ my favourite dancefloor record of the last few months is easily ‘Save’ by Kap Bambino.
It’s all in the mix - with the melody amped to swamp all below it, swelling to something like a cathedral organ - and the resultant reverent melancholy perfected by the lyrics which, ok, may be barked, but only to betray actual animal emotions. Affecting fragments i can make out: “Because I can do nothing… [Something something “diseased”] Because I love you / I would like to save you…I want to give you the forcefield…” (hmm…just listened again, and have horrible feeling ‘the forcefield’ may be my invention, which wd be sad - let’s pretend.)

As a means of gaining my doctorology in funthrapology, I present some recent examples of mutations found in the wild…
Above: the precious (in every sense) manmade-beauty-spot which is new Border Community signee Luke Abbott’s ‘Melody 120′. Next, Teenagersintokyo, who I have mixed feelings toward - compoundnameofband (-10 pts); song title, ‘Very Vampyr’ (+5); verse that zig-zags competently but predictably (-5); actually dressing like The Lost Boys (+/-0); attaining the chorus and bouncing around joyously in a manner i’m calling ‘twee noir’ (+10). See? Undecided.

I tend to pretend I’m allergic to the hyperbole so often creamed from the breathless fingers (!) of other hacks - but it’s more the music industry’s constant/regular need to hype the undeserving that really alienates me; the paper-thin and long-prolonged fake orgasm of the ad campaign, once removed. So many ‘best new bands’… So much ‘download this’…
But anyway, ostentatious musings aside, the reason I’m writing you today is to do all of that re: Micachu (pictured above) who makes radically dreamy stuff as a grimish mixtape producer, plays it live with her band, The Shapes, and lobs compositions into the grateful/confused arms of the London Philharmonic.
As you’ll soon see, I made her ‘Lone Ranger’ my single of the month in May’s issue. That led me to download her free ‘Filthy Friends’ mixtape. And, having given the fifty-minute beast headspace at least three times, this is the most exclamation-pointy I’ve been about a new artist since Marnie Stern. Maverick chimera!
